Six members recently represented Great Britain on behalf of the association at an international symposium in Verden, Germany on November 3rd 2010 organised by Bettina Kiel who chairs the Reiten im Damensattel. Catherine Hislam, Vice Chair; Roger Philpott former Chair; Vanessa Hood, Chair of JET; Sarah Hislam.Area 10 Chair; Claire Lewis, five times  former Side Saddle Rider of the Year and an A Instructor as well as Paula Keeley were invited to join over seventy other delegates at this inaugural event. Other countries represented included Austria, Estonia, the Czech Republic, France, Russia and Switzerland. The event took place at the Deutsches Pferdemuseum- the national museum dedicated to the horse at Verden.

The extensive programme included two sessions lead by Christoph Hess the Director of Training in Germany on the importance and heritage of correct training in  equestrian events. There was a session from a lecturer in horse osteopathy, Beatrix Schulte Wein, who spoke on the consequences of unsuitable saddles. Viola Ebbecke and Sakia von Ehrenkrak, master saddlers from Austria, looked at the evolution of the side saddle and the requirements of making new saddles with the aid of an excellent set of slides. Vanessa Hood talked through the correct position of the rider with Claire Lewis demonstrating and later Roger Philpott and Claire analysed videos of side saddle riders. Further sessions included several presentations about the museum and its collection of photographs, archive books and replica costumes,as well as a session from a  Baroque trained instructor on classical riding.

The day was extremely informative and provided a wonderful opportunity for side saddle enthusiasts to meet and share knowledge, basic principles and expertise. Participants were eager that it should be the first and not the last international conference dedicated to side saddle riding!
